A home EV charger is one of the best investments you can make as an electric car owner, but the total cost depends on far more than the sticker price. This guide breaks down every element of EV charger installation cost in the UK so you know exactly what to budget.

What a standard installation costs

A typical home EV charger installation in the UK costs between £800 and £1,500 fully fitted. That total splits roughly into two parts: the charger unit itself at £450 to £900 and the labour plus materials at £400 to £600. Most installations fall comfortably within that range, but the single biggest variable is the length of the cable run from your consumer unit to the charger location.

A straightforward install where the charger sits on an external wall close to the fuseboard will be at the lower end. If the cable needs to travel through multiple rooms, across a loft space, or underground beneath a driveway, expect to pay more. London and the South East typically add 20 to 30 per cent above the national baseline due to higher labour costs and parking logistics.

OZEV grant

The original Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme for homeowners closed in April 2022 when the government decided that falling charger prices no longer justified a universal subsidy. However, the scheme is still very much alive for several groups. Renters can claim £350 off the cost of installation, and from April 2026 that figure rises to £500. Flat owners in buildings with dedicated parking can also apply, as can landlords installing chargers for tenants.

The Workplace Charging Scheme remains active too, offering businesses up to £350 per socket for up to 40 sockets. The overall OZEV grant programme has been extended to at least March 2027, giving eligible applicants plenty of time to take advantage.

Installation requirements

The most fundamental requirement is off-street parking. You need a driveway, garage, or dedicated parking space where the charger can be wall-mounted and a cable can safely reach your car. On-street properties without any off-street option cannot have a home charger installed.

Electrically, a dedicated 32A circuit is needed from your consumer unit to the charger. If your existing consumer unit is old, full, or lacks an available way, an upgrade may be required at an additional cost of £150 to £400. The cable run from the consumer unit to the charger is charged by the metre, typically £10 to £20 per metre for surface-mounted runs or £40 to £60 per metre for underground ducting beneath a driveway.

Your installer must also submit a DNO (Distribution Network Operator) notification. For most standard 7.4 kW installations this is a formality, but if your property's main fuse needs upgrading to handle the additional load, the DNO process can add an 8 to 12 week delay while they schedule the work.

Three-phase vs single-phase

Around 95 per cent of UK homes have a single-phase electricity supply, which supports a maximum charger output of 7.4 kW. That delivers roughly 30 miles of range per hour and will fully charge most EVs overnight without any difficulty. Three-phase supplies allow chargers up to 22 kW, but upgrading your property from single-phase to three-phase costs £3,500 to £8,000 or more on top of the charger itself.

For the vast majority of drivers, three-phase is not worth the expense. Both single-phase and three-phase chargers will deliver a full battery by morning if you plug in at bedtime. Three-phase only makes practical sense if you need rapid daytime top-ups at home, run a business with multiple vehicles, or already have a three-phase supply for other equipment.

What to look for in an installer

Any installer fitting a home EV charger should be OZEV-approved, which is mandatory if you want to claim a grant. They should also be registered with NICEIC or NAPIT as a competent electrician, and ideally be TrustMark registered, which ties into government consumer protection standards.

After the installation, your installer must provide three things: an Electrical Installation Certificate confirming the work meets BS 7671 wiring regulations, a DNO notification confirming your distribution network operator has been informed, and a TrustMark lodgement recording the job on the national register.

Watch out for red flags. Any installer who refuses to provide a written quote, demands full payment upfront before the work begins, or has no verifiable reviews should be avoided. A reputable installer will always survey your property first, provide a detailed quote, and take final payment only on completion.

Smart charger regulations

Since June 2022, all new home EV chargers sold in the UK must meet the Electric Vehicles (Smart Charge Points) Regulations. This means every charger must default to off-peak charging schedules, include a randomised delay at start-up to prevent grid surges, and meet baseline cybersecurity standards. All current major charger brands comply with these regulations out of the box, so this is not something you need to worry about when choosing a unit.

Timeline

The physical installation itself typically takes 2 to 6 hours depending on complexity. A simple wall-mount close to the consumer unit can be done in a morning, while longer cable runs or consumer unit upgrades extend the work into a full day.

The end-to-end timeline from first enquiry to charging your car can range from a few days to several weeks. If a DNO main fuse upgrade is needed, that process alone can add months to the schedule as you wait for the distribution network operator to arrange the work.
