What is the 3p-per-mile EV road tax coming in 2028?

From the 2028/29 tax year EVs are expected to pay a per-mile charge on top of standard VED — our cost model lets you see its impact.

As more of the fleet goes electric, fuel-duty revenue falls, and the Government has signalled a per-mile charge for electric cars from the 2028/29 tax year, reported at around 3p per mile, alongside the standard rate of VED that EVs already pay.

What that means for you depends on your mileage: at 8,000 miles a year, 3p/mile is about £240 a year; at 15,000 miles it's £450. Our cost model adds this as a toggle so you can see the before-and-after.

Every car page shows a "from 2028" cost alongside today's cost. There's also a dedicated 2028 mileage-tax explainer. Figures update as policy is confirmed — see methodology.
