The honest truth about long EV journeys
They're different, not impossible. A 300-mile trip needs planning that a petrol car doesn't. You'll stop at least once to charge, you need to know where that stop is, and you need to know your car's real motorway range , not the WLTP number on the sticker.
But the planning takes five minutes, and the stops add 30–45 minutes to a journey that was already going to take four or five hours. Most people adapt fast. After two or three trips, it becomes as routine as filling up with petrol, just with a coffee break built in.
Plan your stops before you leave
Use Zap-Map or A Better Routeplanner (ABRP). Both let you enter your car model, your starting state of charge, and your destination. They'll tell you where to stop, how long to charge, and what you'll arrive with.
Set your car's real range, not WLTP. Target an arrival state of charge of 15–20%, enough to reach an alternative charger if your planned one is broken or busy. Plan to charge from 10–80% at each stop, which is the fastest charging window. On motorways, aim for a stop every 100–150 miles depending on your car's real range.
The 10–80% rule and why it matters
Charging slows dramatically above 80%. A 20–80% charge on a modern EV might take 25 minutes at a 150 kW rapid charger. Going from 80–100% can take another 30 minutes or more, because the battery management system throttles the power to protect the cells.

Motorway range: the number that matters
At 70 mph, most EVs achieve 60–70% of their WLTP range. A car rated at 250 miles WLTP might realistically do 160–175 miles at motorway speed in winter. This is the figure you need to plan from, not the headline number.

Which chargers to use on a long trip
Stick to rapid chargers rated at 50 kW or above on motorways. The main networks you'll encounter are:
Tesla Superchargers (now open to non-Tesla cars at most UK sites), Gridserve Electric Highway (most motorway services), Ionity (up to 350 kW at selected locations), BP Pulse (widespread, variable speeds), and InstaVolt (contactless, no app needed).

Winter road trips
Cold weather drops range further and slows charging slightly. The battery needs to warm up before it can accept full charging power, so your first rapid charge on a cold morning may be slower than expected.
Preheat the car while still plugged in. This uses grid electricity instead of battery range to warm both the cabin and the battery. Allow 10–15% more stops or shorter legs in winter compared to summer. For specific figures, see how much range do EVs lose in winter.
What experienced EV drivers actually do
Most combine the charging stop with a coffee or loo break. You were going to stop anyway on a four-hour drive. The difference is that now the stop has a purpose and a predictable duration. After a few trips, it becomes routine.
The anxiety is almost always worse than the reality. The main frustration experienced drivers report is broken chargers, not range. That's why checking Zap-Map status before arriving at a charger is the single most useful habit to build. If a charger shows as out of service, move to your backup. When a long trip genuinely isn't practical
If your car has sub-120 mile real motorway range, think early Nissan Leaf (24 kWh or 30 kWh), Renault ZE, or Smart EQ, trips over 200 miles become genuinely tedious. You'll need three or four stops, some of them on 50 kW chargers that aren't fast enough to make the maths work comfortably.
Be honest with yourself about how often you make these trips. If it's twice a year, hiring a petrol car might be cheaper and simpler than buying a bigger-battery EV you don't need the rest of the time.
